Peeing

I need help! Owen is 5 and has been standing up to pee for quite a few months now. His daddy (God love him) taught him how to stand up AND put the seat back down! It's Sammy that's the problem. He REFUSES to go standing up. Not only that, when he goes sitting down he insists on someone "yining it up." If he's not attended to, it gets "stuck" and he can't go.

This is a real problem considering we have a 9 month old baby to take care of and you never know when the urge will hit Sammy and he won't be able to hold it. Also, when we get the girl across the street to babysit, it's very awkward for her to "yine it up" so she just avoids it altogether and when we get home, Sammy is curled up in a ball on the couch in pain!

My in-laws bought us a toddler urinal a while ago. It's called "Peter Potty" and it looks like this:

Owen liked it a lot but by the time we got it, he was almost tall enough to use the regular toilet. I liked that this had an adjustable height because I figured I could almost train a kid as easily on this as a potty chair. Boy, do those things STINK! But this has absolutely NO ODOR since the collection tray is completely enclosed. Regardless, Sammy won't use this thing at all so it's sitting in the bathroom collecting dust until I attempt to get William to use it, which will be another year at least.

Has anyone out there had this problem with their boys? I really thought he would look up to his dad and older brother and want to be (pee) like them. Or maybe he is doing this out of a feeling of being neglected. It might be a situation where he feels that this is the only way he can get at least a few minutes of our undivided attention. Any suggestions?

Your August 19, 2008 post says Samuel will not pee standing. It is now March 16, 2009 and he is still not. Have you given up?

You also stated that you would be training William to use urinal in about a year. It's a good thing William is standing alone now because it's only 5 months until his training to stand in front of urinal and that will only be a month before new baby arrives.

I'll be happy to try to help with this if you want when I visit next month.

Luv, Mum

Yes, I have given up on ever getting Sammy to stand up to pee. I don't know what his issue is, but it's not going away.
Many people have advised me to sit him BACKWARDS on the toilet so that then I wouldn't have to "yine it up." I tried that, but he was really freaked out and refused to go. So looks like I am stuck with this duty for the forseeable future.

I don't know when I will train Wililam. I am hoping to get him going when I'm on leave and the new baby is here. We'll have to see how he's doing. I hope he's quicker at learning to use the potty than he has been at walking!
